Diane Elliot, M.D., Esther Moe, Ph.D., M.P.H., and Jennifer Smith, M.P.H., work in the Division of Health Promotion & Sports Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. They are part of a team of physicians and research scientists who have developed nationally recognized health education programs, including working with high school athletes, middle school students, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and hospital employees. For over a decade, Drs. Elliot and Moe have worked on safety and wellness programs for the fire service. In that capacity they observed the tragedy of fire related injuries. This video targets seniors those at high risk of fire and injuries in the home – seniors and other vulnerable populations. Funding from a FEMA grant has made the production of these videos possible. Our collaborators in designing and distributing this video are the Meals on Wheels People. Joan Smith is Executive Director and Ross Jonak is Assistant Operations Manager of Meals on Wheels People in Portland, Oregon. Since 1970 the Meals on Wheels People has provided a nutritional and social lifeline for seniors through 35 meal sites in Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties and Meals on Wheels delivery to homebound seniors. With the help of nearly 10,000 volunteers, the nonprofit organization now serves 5,000 meals daily and 1.2 million meals each year. Visit: www.mealsonwheelspeople.org. We also are grateful to the many other consultants who assisted in making this video. More information about Drs. Elliot and Moe is available at www.ohsu.edu/hpsm, and we can be reached through the contact link on this website.

This project was funded by the US Department of Homeland Security, through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Fire Prevention and Safety Grants Program. This program supports projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards. The primary goal of these projects is to target high-risk populations and reduce injury and prevent death. We appreciate the funding and FEMA’s support for the project.
